Mezzanine floor cost calculator

Enter the size of the floor, what it is for and the extras you need, and we work out a typical price range from installers' published prices and UK cost guides. It is a guide for budgeting, not a quote: the survey decides the real price.

By Mezzanine Installers. Prices checked October 2026. Figures exclude VAT at 20%, which most VAT-registered businesses can reclaim.

A free matching service, not a mezzanine floor installer. We find one who covers your area and tell you who they are before anything is shared. How it works

10 to 1,000 m². Small floors cost more per m².

Goods lifts start from about £7,000 (small dumbwaiters) and are quoted after survey, so they are not added here.

Typical price, a guide, not a quote

£15,700 to £36,000

100 m² storage floor, one staircase, excluding VAT

How the range is built

Handrail and edge protection (20 m)£1,200 to £7,000

No fire-rated ceiling: a storage-only floor under 20 m in each direction usually does not need one. Building control decides.

How published prices compare

Fully installed figures include stairs, handrail and approvals; structure-led figures cover mainly steel and deck. Our ranges sit between the two because we build them line by line.

How the calculator works

  • Structure and deck, by floor size: up to 50 m² at £160 to £240 per m²; 51 to 150 m² at £110 to £200; over 150 m² at £80 to £180.
  • Heavy storage, production or plant (6.0 kN/m² or more) adds 15 to 25% to the structure.
  • Fire protection is added for every use except storage only, and for storage floors over 20 m per side.
  • Handrail is priced on two open sides of a square floor.
  • Design, calculations and building control are always included.

Where these prices come from

Published prices for mezzanines vary more than in most trades, because some figures cover only the steel and deck and others include stairs, handrail, fire protection and approvals. We built our ranges line by line from The Mezzanine Company's 2026 cost guide (July 2026), Western Industrial's cost page and fire protection guide (2026), Checkatrade (September 2026), MyBuilder (October 2026), Pallite (May 2026), the F.H. Brundle pallet gate list price and Stannah for lifts, all read 26 October 2026. None of the guides states whether VAT is included; we treat the figures as excluding VAT at 20%. Rounded. A guide, not a quote.

Mezzanine cost questions

How much does a mezzanine floor cost per square metre?

Structure and deck alone are typically £75 to £200 per m² in the cost guides; fully installed with stairs, handrail and approvals, The Mezzanine Company publishes £300 to £400 per m² for storage and £450 to £600 for offices and retail. Small floors cost more per m² than large ones.

Why do published prices vary so much?

Some quote only steel and boards; others include stairs, handrail, fire protection, lighting and building control. Ask every installer to price the same list.

Does the price include VAT?

No. Figures exclude VAT at 20%, which most VAT-registered businesses reclaim.

What adds most to the cost?

Fire protection, a heavier load class, extra staircases and fit-out such as partitions and heating on office floors.

Is building regulations approval included?

We include £1,500 to £4,000 for design, calculations and building control. Some installers include the application at no separate charge.

Can I get an exact price online?

No. Heights, slab, columns, sprinklers and access all change the price, so installers survey first. Our free service can arrange quotes: start here.
